Membership is entirely voluntary, but joining is restricted to male students in Rutlish School as students from Year 8 to Year 9 (only). Cadets are then able to stay within the contingent until the age of 18 years old. 6th Formers may stay only if they have already been a cadet from Rutlish School (Year 8-11).
Rutlish School CCF comprises two service sections: Army and RAF. Army Section is affiliated to the Rifles Regiment. RAF Section's parent station is RAF Odiham.
The Contingent parades and trains after school on Wednesdays during term time, between 3:00pm and 6:30pm (training may overrun occasionally to NLT 1845hrs). Additional training is carried out during weekend training days, weekend camps, Easter holidays (challenging pursuit) and Summer Central Camp (military and adventurous training). Central Camp takes place during school term time, towards the end of the summer term.
Army Section training is based around the Army Certificate Syllabus (ACS). ACS syllabus comprises of drill, skill at arms, shooting, map & compass, fieldcraft and first aid.
RAF Section cadets will progress through a three-part syllabus, covering a range of technical and general subjects. The opportunity to fly is an important aspect of the RAF cadet experience. RAF Section cadets over the age of 13 years and 3 months will have the opportunity to fly with 6 Air Experience Flight (6AEF) at RAF Benson and 618 Volunteer Gliding School based at RAF Odiham.
Senior cadets showing the necessary aptitude and commitment may be nominated for gliding and flying scholarships.
Additional training courses are available and are advertised annually. Examples of recent courses allocated to Rutlish School CCF cadets are:
The CCF offers cadets the opportunity to turn much of what they do within their cadet service into a City & Guilds, BTEC or Institute of Leadership & Management vocational qualifications, potentially equivalent to four GCSEs (ranging between Level 1 to Level 3). For more information, please follow this link to: Home - Cadet Vocational College (cvcollege.org)
The administrative HQ of the Contingent is the Benton Building (known colloquially as "The Hut") named after the late Major Neville Benton, who served with the Contingent and the Army Cadet Force for 53 years. A man much respected and loved... he is sorely missed by all that knew him.
The CCF at Rutlish School is staffed by officers and instructors (none of whom are teachers). Many are former Rutlish pupils and cadets who recognise the true value of CCF membership and wish to ensure that Rutlish pupils continue to enjoy the opportunities offered by the Contingent. Regular assistance is also given by Non Commissioned Officers of the RAF and Army.
The Contingent receives no funding from the school and is reliant on a small annual grant from the Ministry of Defence and contributions (monthly subs) from parents.
In the event that any items of uniform or other kit issued are not returned, in good condition and laundered upon cessation of service, all or part of the deposit may be forfeited and a further charge for the full outstanding value may be made.
*A refundable deposit of £60.00 is payable for uniform & kit from Army Section Cadets (only). In the event that any items of uniform or other kit issued are not returned, in good condition and laundered upon cessation of service, all or part of the deposit may be forfeited and a further charge for the full outstanding value may be made. General wear and tear or outgrown uniform can be replaced free of charge through the MoD via Contingent supply chain. Please note, any deposits not claimed within 6 months of a cadet leaving the unit, may be donated into the contingent for the benefit of the cadets.
Uniform is supplied to cadets, but remain the property of the MoD. Army Section cadets are issued with Personal Clothing System Multi-Terrian Pattern (PCS MTP), which is the latest pattern camouflage uniform issued to the British military.
RAF Section cadets are not provided with MTP camouflage uniform, so it has fallen to the contingent to source and provide. Therefore, unfortunately, we have to charge an initial cost of £60 per new recruit joining the RAF Section. For general duties, the RAF do provide RAF Blue uniform for free.
Combat High Boots are not supplied to cadets and must be purchased privately. These should be of the high-leg (above ankle) combat type. Below ankle-high boots are not acceptable. It is recommended that Army Section cadets purchase brown/black boots and RAF Section purchase black only, which can worn with both RAF blue and camouflage uniforms.
Cadet's feet will grow over the years, so it is advised that you spend between £30-£50 maximum on boots each time. There are very good used boots that are surplus to the Regular forces and be found online for a fraction of the £120+ prices when new. However, the choice is yours.
Below are links to a number of companies which supply cadet boots and other equipment.
Do not purchase boots until your son/ward has completed the third week of training please.
Do NOT buy Doc Martins (they are not suitable for Cadet activities and not deemed as military boots).

Rangers in Surbiton also stock some 2nd hand boots and offer a cadet discount

PLEASE NOTE: It is the responsibility of the account holder to cancel standing orders upon a cadet ceasing service with the CCF. No refunds will be made for any overpayments made through failure to cancel a standing order.
